Talks & Teas – Welcome to Crewkerne, please invade carefully – with Dr Sheila Seymour

January 8, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

£5.00

In 1688 William, Prince of Orange, was invited by several well-placed Lords to replace King James II who was proving quite unsatisfactory. William had a good claim to the throne being James’ nephew, son-in-law, a Protestant and from the Netherlands where rulers knew their place. He set off with an invasion force (just in case), heading for the southeast coast. Ferocious weather drove him on & on until eventually he was able to land in Brixham. Then he set off for London – via Crewkerne, of course. Terrible weather, his forces had hated Devon, nothing went to plan.

Sheila will talk about William’s spectacular leadership, his opinion of Crewkerne and onward journey to London via Exeter and Salisbury.

And something to ponder in the meantime – Where did Crewkerne accommodate (and feed) over 4,000 very wet horses, let alone the miffed oxen and thoroughly exhausted men?
